Molding the Clay
Type
Residential
Description
We often talk about our “mold the clay” philosophy and initiate each project with that core principle in mind. The notion of us all getting our hands in the mix has such tangible appeal and every so often a project develops into the perfect representation of the process. This inland lake home design transformed from a monochromatic modern farmhouse style to an imposing contemporary lake lodge. Both versions have great visual focus but evoke vastly different moods. We love viewing the renderings side-by-side to accentuate the stark differences in composition. Individuality is aptly illustrated, even as we kept the inner wish list intact.

Client inspiration photos originally depicted bright, clean spaces composed of light colors and a breezy, summer day in the sun atmosphere. With this in mind, the SDG team utilized farmhouse accents to emphasize the varied roofline dimensions, including a cheeky “widow’s walk” stairwell, while the uniformity of simple lines and white exterior finishes allowed lake views to steal the show. As plans advanced, the client was then drawn to bolder, loftier angles accentuated by a deeper, earthy color palette. The team dug deeper and punctuated those characteristics with impressive Atlas-inspired stone columns to hold up the soaring roof over the imposing front entry. The column detail was echoed on the lake side to support twin prow roofs in the great room, and a matching larger prow covering the cathedral-ceilinged three seasons room.

Both designs captured all the interior must-haves of the client, including maximized lake views, welcoming, comfortable, and open spaces for gathering and relaxing with friends and family, and plenty of places for all to rest and lay their heads at night. Plans also include ample outdoor living opportunities and spaces to enjoy nature while under cover from the elements and things that buzz. At Spalding Design Group, we consider this a win-win situation!
