Description
Converting two former detention pods into a comfortable, welcoming space for young children is a rewarding, humbling task. This remodeled facility is meant to provide youth crisis stabilization and diagnostic services to children in need of a place to stay when transitioning from parental custody to foster care during an unstable situation.

A major challenge presented during this project was to transform the cold, solitary environment of an existing cell into an inviting, comfortable safe haven. Children who utilize this facility, some as young as six years old, are not visiting due to bad behavior on their part, but instead are there as a point of relief. Because they are housed here through no fault of their own, the time spent can be confusing, lonely and challenging. Our goal was to make the transition as positive as possible. While the warm orange color invites playful energy in the open space, an earth toned palette was thoughtfully selected by our interior design team to soften the sleeping rooms and invoke a sense of peace and calm.

Personal touches such as Velcro boards, wall decals, and mirrors were added to the room in an effort to make children feel more comfortable, while keeping within the safety and budgetary limitations.
