Description
Appreciating life’s quiet pleasures and small wonders is at the heart of the Danish concept of hygge, a feeling of contentment, well-being and comfort. Subtle natural hues, greenery, and soft, plush textures are the standard in a design form that is best described as being encompassed in a warm hug.

Inspired by minimalism and nature, Scandinavian design is the essence of simplicity and an oft companion to hygge. Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland all embrace the clean beauty and functionality of this practical approach to architecture. Each detail is useful and intentionally placed, omitting anything superfluous or unnecessary. With a client’s vision and a Scandinavian mindset, we came to the drawing board excited to introduce Nordic flare to an Indiana locale.

Details
Accentuating the design with a neutral color palette, soft textiles, and varied textures adds welcome warmth to a sometimes-stark aesthetic. In countries where winter daylight may max out at seven hours, traditional Scandinavian design incorporates light-colored flooring and walls to reflect luminosity and brighten rooms. Window openings of varied sizes and optimal placement are adorned with little or no coverings to capture maximized sunlight. On the exterior of this home, we embraced clean lines with black accents and then softened the mass with earthy, putty hued stonework. The assorted windows add character while encouraging light to illuminate the spacious interior.

Outdoor living spaces, like the screen porch, upper decks and walk out patio, provide countless opportunities for the residents and their guests to connect with nature. Combining relaxation, nature and functionality is the sweet spot to achieving logam, the Swedish version of perfect balance. We did veer a little outside the lines to accommodate the homeowner’s desire for a golf simulator room, billiards table, and recreation spaces, but perhaps a dash of extravagant indoor activity sparks a different sort of peace. We enjoyed our Midwest/Nordic collaboration to achieve the client’s goal of not too much and not too little. We’d say it’s just right.
